About Optimizing Magento
Optimizing Magento is a chronicle (or diary or blog) of experiences optimizing the Magento Ecommerce platform for search engine marketing. SEO for magento is not simple, and search engine optimization on magento involves careful, strategic customizations.
Magento is a trademark of a for-profit corporation, which pubishes a website Magentocommerce.com. They have licensed Magento under the Open Source license. The developer communtiy has adopted the MGO moniker to refer to Magento, since that corporation has decided to restrict the use of the term “Magento”. While Magento is said to be “open”, it is not clear to me how “open” they really are, or what their for-profit intentions are with Magento. Some companies exploit the public trust granted to “open source” by trading on the Open Source label, while actually operating as for-profit, closed corporations, barely interested in promoting god quality, free software. I am not sure how this corporation building out Magento intends to operate. That will only be learned over time.
As the developer community adopt, support, and promote Magento based on the promise of true Open Source software, we can only hope the individuals behind the corporation uphold that public trust. Of course, if they do not, we have our rights to free speech to exercise on our own behalf.
