The first steps to optimizing Magento for search engines (making Magento SEO friendly) is to plan out your template use and your overall site design. The entire site must be search friendly, not just a list of specific aspects of Magento’s configuration. Sometimes the template has more to do with SEO success than any other factor.
If search engines do a perfect job, they read, understand, and index your entire site. When they do that, what they find is what is presented by your template. Why not prepare for the days when search engines are close to perfect? That is why Magento SEO starts with the template selection.

While many Magento SEO articles address on-page search engine ranking factors like headers and category titles, you may get a lot more mileage out of adjustments to your template. The Magento template defines the code structure of the page, and that page structure is very important to SEO. It is actually the reason that search engine optimization has “on page factors” in the first place.
SEO Modifications for Magento should focus on the template, making sure the Magento template used demonstrates search engine friendly – ness. I think that is the first, most impactful SEO effort you can undertake whren trying to SEO Magento.

Magento is still evolving but several seo consultants have begun offering SEO services specifically for Magento. We are only using Magento in development right now because it is very slow as a shopping cart (several seconds per page view in the cart).

Magento URLs are search friendly but there is more you can do to make them search optimal. Perhaps “search optimal URLs for Magento” is a good article that needs to be written. Since Magento runs on a form of the Zend Framework, there are numerous options for implementing SEO friendly URLs.
I’m working with a pretty smart search engineoptimization consultant rightnow on this issue. The SEF URL part isn’t the highest priority right now, but it is on the agenda. I’m learning alot abut how SEO works and it is different than I had thought.
